Corinna's thesis

The No Child Left Behind Act should be revoked.

  1. Totally agree. In my experience, this act punishes teachers, administrators, and not least of all the students involved. I worked at a school that was in phase III of the mandated school improvment plan. The only area where we still weren't meeting the standards was attendance. We had attendance Olympics to encourage the kids to come, so their class could win the "honor" of highest attendance, but attendance is not directly tied to the teachers and they were going to bring in all new staff if this "area" wasn't improved upon. Nice idea in theory, but the implementation of the NCLB and its standards are ridiculous.

  2. Something needs to change but i don't how it would i will be interested to see the ways that you believe that they should be changed!!! It is something i can relate to since i went through the schooling system and did standardized testing.
    Good thesis

  3. I agree that this is not acceptable, and that something needs to be done. But like Melanie, I am wondering what exactly you're saying should be changing and taking its place.

  4. i agree. i graduated from newport high school in 2006 and one of the years i was there we got an award for this no child left behind thing and i was so confused. i felt like there were kids left behind in classes all the time so a lot of us had no clue how we were even able to get this award. i think this act needs to get removed. its pointless.

  5. I agree. This act is making schools focus too much on standards and meeting all these ridiculous goals for fear of losing their funding. I feel like children are being negatively affected by it and school just becomes somewhere where you go "through the motions" instead of an expirience.

Children and education should ammount to more than just test scores and statistics.

  6. I don't know if it should be revoked, however, I do think that it should be revised. The No Child Left Behind Act was origionally meant to do good, not bad. It's turned into something that actually ails the education system rather than aiding it in providing a measure of academic ability.

  7. I am very excited to learn more about this act and I do believe that the education of our children should be taken very seriously. Anything that impairs education should be revoked or revised, especially if this is causing more students to fail and is doing more harm than good.

  8. I agree with your thesis. I have seen how it's been both a distraction and a hinderance in my kids' classrooms. It seems like a program that was born with great intentions that has underachieved. Your speech should be a fascinating one.

  9. I agree. We all have different way of learning and we all came from different background. If they are going to determine our graduation based on a standard test is not going to work well. From what i known, not a lot of kids are graduating in the recent year and this hurt teacher as well. The school system should have another approach. I am looking forward to hear from this topic.

  10. i think that we need to find a better alternative to the NCLB, what we have now is not working, but i think we still need to have some sort of standard for education, but i dont agree with how schools are funded accoding to the NCLB.

  11. I would agree, part of becoming a teacher is using your own curriculum and methods to prepare children for life. This would include the selection of material and tests and everything. My freshman english class here at BC was one that would not generally be seen as normal curriculum. However it was one of my most influential classes i've ever taken, and probably the class I've gained the most insight and useful knowledge to help me be successful

  12. No push back from me on that thought. :) I think, however, voters would be reluctant to revoke the NCLB Act without replacing it with something else. Any new legislation would have to answer questions like, how do we know what kind of education America's youth are getting? How do we hold schools and teachers accountable? Beyond financial support, what will make a great school? I'm super interested in these topics. I think you have a great issue for your speech.

  14. I agree. We must repeal this Act. It has obviously not worked and we continue to see our country fail to provide a sustainable education system. We must put real reform that will help our educational system if we do not I am afraid to see our country when the younger generation gets into power.

  15. I agree, if it really does fail the point. But if the act could be changed, to work better for students in school, then I might support it.
