Corinne's thesis

Food companies should not be allowed to market junk foods to kids.
OR
Food companies should not be allowed to advertise their products on television or on the internet; whole foods, grown locally and organically, should be promoted instead.

  1. I like both of those but the first one seems to me like it would be more duable. The second one might be really hard to prove because of freedom of speach and all. However i believe that wholefoods, local foods and organic foods are the best type and i do believe that the world would benefit from them.

  2. I disagree with the 2nd thesis statement. With out advertisement, these companies would fail, and the many Americans jobs who work for these companies would be in jeopardy, and possibly out of work, especially the people in the advertisement, and marketing departments.

  3. I like the first thesis better because it is directly to the point, and says exactly what you mean. I think you can also bring up the points from the second one in your speech, though instead of banning food advertisements on the tv and internet, I think that the local/organic foods should continue to be promoted as a better option.

  4. I think you should focus on parental responsibility in bringing those products into the home. The power of persuasion that children have over their parents and give personal examples of how kids don't ask for junk they don't see on t.v. Maybe also touch on the "reptilian brain" and the desire for sugar, fat and the study in Africa on children suffering from starvation and the use of "sugar" to help them rehab, as a counterpoint to your thesis.

  5. I don't agree. I think that what you ingest into your body is completely up to you and no one else. Yes fast food places are there as a convinience but so are grocery stores. Education would go a long way into helping people understand what to do and what not to do.

  6. I agree with your first thesis. I believe that adverstising junk food tempts our children to eat junk food and there should be a leash on it. In watching just an hour of TV, it is crazy how many ads are selling unhealthy food in a appealing way that makes us want to go out a buy a whole cart full! I just read a great article about it, too! It was in Life Magazine and it's called "Sweet Spot" if you ever want to take a look at it.

  7. Oh, and that one at 8:11 was by Shannon. Sorry! Forgot to put my name down.

  8. I disagree with both statements. I think it would be too difficult to say at what point in an ad you are marketing to a junk food adult vs a child. The loop holes would abound and they would still be on tv. I think more education on foods at home, in the school system and by the people who are producing wholesome foods would make more of an impact.

  9. I really agree with Corinna's comments above. There is the ideal, then there's the practicality of carrying it out. I don't agree with either statement simply because there is no way to practically implement them. My son is learning all about nutrition in his health class in middle school. It's amazing what he is realizing about junk carbs and high fructose corn syrup. It's a powerful thing when the instruction takes place both in the home and at school. I support education and parental modeling over legislating advertizing.

  10. I agree about both of these thesis. However, I believe that if you focused on the first one, you may be impeding on some regulations and laws with freedom of speech. As much as I agree with both of them, that is the flaw that I see. I WISH things could be that way. I think that you could do a lot with your second thesis. Especially because you rarely see commercials and advertisements promoting healthy food choices. I'm really excited to hear some possible options you have to help curb our bad eatting habits and especially to instil good ones in future generations.

  11. I agree with your thesis,I also think that it is too much to advertise things for children. They are the ones that can have all they want without judging whether they need it or not. It strikes parents' pockets. Children are not he ones to be advertised because they are not the ones to solve their problems.

  12. I agree but disagreeing also. Yes, junk foods are bad but not to the extend that they should not be promoted. How are company going to survive if they don't advertise their product, plus millions of people are feeding their families off that junk foods. To not let them advertising is like taking the jobs away. I guess kid should learn everything about good foods in school, it is better to promotes nutritious food in that environment.

  13. i agree with your first thesis. junk food should not be emphaiszed to children. children are easily pursuaded and if they see children on TV "happy" because of some fast food, or candy, they will want that too. for your second thesis i think that denying the right to advertise is against the freedom of speech, but i do agree that healthy foods should be promoted instead of junk food.

  14. I think you are working towards a good cause. I think that this is a start to a nation without junk food. Since kids are the primary consumers of most of this unnatural food, stopping it here would make a huge impact. Yes this would make many companies lose lots of money, but that is only money made from feeding our youth empty calories to rot teeth and spread obesity.

  15. I disagree... There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with junk food... in moderation.

  16. I agree and disagree. We should limit how much they should be allowed to market and how many commercials they have but we can not rid the system entirely of being able to market junk food. I think instead we should make companies make a healthy alternative for every unhealthy food they have. But it needs to be more strict not like what we have with cereal now a days where it says its healthy to eat captain crunch.

  17. I agree with both provisions of thesis, as it had been long time since such terrible acts should have been put the end to. If the two would be combined, even better.
