I agree. I'd like to see what ideas you have to change the funding, so it's equitable across districts regardless of the property tax base. I think you would get a lot of backlash from parents in the wealtheir districts because a lot of families specifically move to an area because of superior educational opportunites. They would scream about funds being redistributed to all schools as taking away educational opportunities for their own children. I moved to Maple Valley specifically so my kids could attend Tahoma School District based on its ratings in greatschools.net.
there are not too many subjects more important tham our future, our children, and their performance in life. According on Michael Moore there is noway to have worse public school education than it is right now in America. He points out how disorganised the whole system is. Let us realize that funding the school is very important. Great thesis.
I agree, because we need to invest in the future and our future is our children. I believe that the schools today our not nearly as good as they could be and our money could be going to more important things and I believe one of the most important things is education. Great topic!
This IS a great thesis Jennie. I agree with Kathy. We moved to Issaquah for the same reasons. I would love to see more equity across the board as well. Maybe we should open up your protest speech in December to the public!
I agree that the funding needs to be revisited. Along with a good portion of how education is taught and what is important for our children to learn in order to succeed as adults in the workplace. Corinna
I totally agree with your thesis. Especially with things like I-1033 on the ballot comming up. I would recommend researching a little on just what 1033 would do if put into affect. I know a little about how it would affect local K-12 schools, but I think this is totally relevant and it would be interesting to hear more! -Brittany
I definitely agree with your thesis. The education of our children is extremely important and the funding of schools deserves attention. Excited to hear more about this!
I agree with your thesis. Since you mentioned "state", I can see where this is going. Education is important for future generations, especially suburban areas, where kids do not have the opportunities to fully educated. More funding would results in a better environment. School is supposed to be a haven place for learning, right?
Of course funding is critical to k-12 education, but I think the biggest support should not just be in dollars but in teachers. A teacher spends eight hours a day, five days a week for 180 days in the classroom with kids. (That is more than some parents spend with their kids during the week.) How do we get great teachers? How do we support them, trust them, keep them motivated? Funding is NOT the only answer. Also, the kids that do the best have the support at home. Perhaps schools could be run in more of a co-op fashion, where parents are responsible for paying a certain amount (in addition to their taxes) based on how much they help out at the schools either through volunteering or donation. Keep a tax base, but add some kind of tuition. For the families that can't afford it, give them opportunities to take care of the school in other ways. It seems parents need more skin in the game. We can't just throw the kids in schools and expect the teachers to handle everything. If parents were more involved, would we need more funding?
I agree, funding is such a big part of quality eduation. teachers cannot teach properly if they dont have the necessary resourses, even if they are great teachers.
I agree. We need to change our state wide funding approach on education. As it is now the people who go to the schools where people are wealthy are the ones who are getting the better education. I have first hand experience on this. Going to a school that is from rich economic status and one that is more middle class. We defiantly need change else we will continue to see the gap between rich and poor widen.
I like your thesis! It is very to the point! I agree that something needs to be done about the funding everyone needs and equal oppertunity!

Good! to the point and effective we know what your stand is, yet you haven't tried to win us over in one sentence.

I like this! Although, I do not know much about why we should change it, but there is always room for improvement

I do agree. It does sound right, but I do not know much on how the money are spend right now in K-12 school district.
ReplyDeleteI am new to Washington state and am not familiar with the current school funding approach. I look forward to your persuasive speech to find out more!
