I believe your right. However Some drug users and crimes go hand in hand it is stats that people that have an addiction to some drugs start to commet crimes such as stealing inorder to pay for their drugs. I can see your point people with adictions need to be handled different than what they are it is a sickness. -Melanie
Hmm. What do you mean when you say they shouldn't be "considered" criminals? They shouldn't be treated like criminals? Tried as like criminals? I think I want to get a better sense of your topic and your thesis before I decide exactly where I stand on this.
I think your thesis could be more clear. Drug addicts are obviously in need of intervention to help them break the cycle of addiction. However, if they are committing crimes to fulfill their addictive habit, then they are criminals and should be treated as such. What do you recommend as acceptable treatment for those who are addicted to drugs and haven't committed any crimes?
In addition, those that were in charge of them should be considered criminals. It is very complecated nowadays drugs are too deep in society. But i disagree with you partially, there is a big role of self in drug cunsumption.
I don't really understand your thesis. However, I do think that drug addicts should in part be treated like criminals due to the fact that if nothing was done about their drug consumption, there would be nothing to stop them from drug usage. Some of them start out as drug addicts, but that turns into more, such as dealing and getting other people to use drugs, and that could become a big problem.
I agree, I don't think that people should have a stigma attached to their heads if their sole crime is drug use. There are so many factors that go into the consumption of drugs and after you have that label on your head it becomes hard to get a job, schooling, etc. Drug convitions should have a different category. These people need help not a record.
I agree with your thesis in insofar as drug addicts not taking up so much jail place. Intent to sell drugs? Yes, criminal. Drug users alone need a different route than criminal jail time. I do think you may want to consider rewording your thesis - making your position more clear for us to decide.
Your thesis is a bit vague for me. If someone is taking illegal drugs, yes they may need help other than being in jail. If they are selling drugs or committing crimes in order to purchase drugs, then they are a criminal and should be dealt with accordingly. (part of the plan may include rehab) A drug addict is not necessarily someone taking illegal drugs. If they are abusing legal drugs and not committing criminal acts, they need rehab not jail. If they are committing crimes to pay for the legal drugs, it is still a crime. Corinna
I agree with your thesis just because I was chatting to you about it and I know what direction you're going in. However, it seems that lots of people are unclear. I think what Corinna stated was what you wanted to say: "If they are abusing legal drugs and not committing criminal acts, they need rehab not jail. If they are committing crimes to pay for the legal drugs, it is still a crime." The only difference maybe that you beleive that drug abusers that use legal AND illegal drugs shouldn't be treated as criminals. That is definitly something you'll need to establish. -Brittany
Don't we already do that? I know adults who have become addicted to prescription drugs but they aren't treated as criminals unless they steal, lie or commit fraud to support their addiction. Are you intending this to apply to homeless addicts? Teens? Stealing seems to be the most common thing an addict is guilty of, not using. If you are referring to rehab clinics rather than jail as a means of helping addicts, then who pays for those? Do we see an increase in taxes? Does one social program get cut so the funds can be diverted elsewhere? As a side note, I think there should be harsher punishment for dealers.
I disagree. In term of "drugs", I am not sure how far you go with it. Since you mentioned "all", I guess this include people who addicted to cocaine as well. And considering this, people who used cocaine is already violated the law. There are no differences in term of criminal. Plus, society is much safer without drugs. If we don't treat them as criminal, the used of drug will be great and there is no point in a society where everyone is addicted.
i agree in the sense that people who use drugs should not be counted as crimials because they have an addiction, they need help.if they did something to harm someone because of the drugs that is a different story. also if they are users and dealers yes they should be counted as criminals. this is a hard subject though because there are so many differnt subcategories.
I agree with your thesis, I don't believe that just using drugs should consider someone a criminal. Unless however by using a drug that person is harming someone or something.
I disagree... lots of drugs are currently illegal so therefore they should be considered criminals. Plus, when you are under the influence you are much more prone to participating in criminal activity.
I disagree. If you were just talking about marijuana I would agree. But drugs such as meth and heroine should not be legalized. Their is direct connections between crimes and people who are addicted to these drugs. We already are having problems being addicted to legal drugs we shouldn't add to this problem.
I agree, only if you do include in your thesis the following: passing drug addiction due to carelesness, or intentionally is counted as criminal act, and if the drugs are the illegal ones, intentionally taken, or due to extreme carelesness. That way, it would be what it currently is, I guess, as I know nothing on the subject.
I agree that you're innocent until proven guilty, no matter who you are, but in order for someone to become a drug addict, they first need to possess drugs and isn't drug possession illegal?

I agree with your statement, as long as the person is not also selling drugs. Addiction is a disease and it needs to be treated that way.
